This project is the result of many years of research, study and travel. It is a project which will consume the next three years of my life.
During this coming year I will repeat a similar process to the one which is now coming to an end here in Bolivia. This involves living for three months in each of Bolivia, Romania, Mozambique and the Solomon Islands. In each country I will, as I have here, collaborate with musicians to create some new pan pipe influenced compositions. I am also making a television documentary about the process of this music making, including the people who make, play and have knowledge about the pan pipe.
Ultimately I plan to produce a CD recording of this collaborative music, a television documentary and a separate CD of the worlds finest pan pipe players. Then, in two years time, I will invite a selected number of musicians from each country, to be a part of an exciting piece of contemporary music theatre in Australia (perhaps ultimately touring the 'Four Corners' of the world to expose this haunting and ecclectic music).
I would sincerely like to thank the many people who have helped, collaborated, inspired, given their time in interviews, taught me music and made me feel so very welcome here in Bolivia. They are (in order of my diary) Dianne, Juan Vera, Maria, Rafael, Prof. Eliodora Nina, Eddy Lima, Efrain Candia, Norka de Candia, Winner y Aracely Candia, Josua Cordoba, Rolando Angelo, Felix Rodriguez, Carlos Ponce y Carolina, Saul Callejas, Ivan Mamani, Takashi y Sylvie, Lucio Flores, Fernando Jimenez, Gabriel Astorga Guachalla, Ruben Valesquez, Ricardo y Ivonne Campos, La Señora de Alojamiento Illimani, Emma, Victor Hugo Guzman, Andres Mamani y Marcello, José Ramos, Jeanette Rojas, Mario Conde y los amigos de Coroico, Rosaria, Lia Angelo, Ulf Griedner, Juan el Doctor, Frida Rocha, Juan Carlos Sarmiento, Hiroyasu Okada and Carlos Fernandez (Australian Consul).
I dedicate this night to Melva Keelan, Subhana, Geoff Prince and Kaye Stott.
My gratitude to the Australia Council for the Arts for supporting my vision.
The new songs, composed and recorded, are:
Mini Voces .....inspired by the sight and sounds of those young people who shout destinations from the mini bus windows. In one day I was aware of their work, as if crying for more than passengers; then the poly rhythmic of their mixed voices, horns and exhaust fumes. From thinking about their lives, present and future, through the smokey haze of traffic congestion, to suddenly having my hand held by the smiling young Rosaria. Composed together with the talented Saul Callejas.
Mariangel .....is dedicated to Maria, who appeared as if an angel, in the life of a friend who had fallen to alcoholism and self destruction. Her smile, positive inner strength, her love, helped save a friend. Composed with the ever smiling Danill Rojas.
Aquí En La Paz .....is a melody resulting from the inspiration of that first week in La Paz. The staggering beauty of Mt Illiimani, a small child begging, new sounds, smells, the children playing football on the street late at night. Written in collaboration with Ruben Valesquez and Felix Rodriguez.
Paso a Paso .....tells of the need to look within for our positive nature, to continually walk tall and forward in this life. All we need to take is one small step, followed by another. Composed together with my good friends, and the new wave of Bolivian musicians, Felix and Ruben.
Cuatro Esquinas .....is a conceptual piece of music. The idea is to integrate ideas, styles, cultures, rhythms ans the individual creativity of musicians from Bolivia, Romania, Mozambique and the Solomon Islands. Together we will create a piece of music from the four corners of the globe. A link between musicians, people, thinking, cultures. Collaboration (thus far) with Saul Callejas, Danillo Rojas, Carlos Ponce, Galo Cortez and Victor Hugo Guzman.
My respect and gratitude to Saul, Felix, Carlos, Saulito, Danillo, Victor, Galo, Hiroaki and Ruben, who have given so freely of their musical talents to record these songs. To Ivan Barrientos, thank you for your many skills, both as a recording engineer and musician.
